A couple of years ago the IAA (International Automobile Exhibition) switched their name to IAA Mobility and widened their narrow focus on motor cars to encompass mobility as a more holistic topic.
Our client ZUKUNFT NAHVERKEHR is committed to the idea of mobility as a basic human need and consequentially perceives local public transport as part of public services.
It goes without saying for ZNV that one of the largest mobility exhibitions in the world should not go without a meaningful representation of local public transport.
Under the motto “mobility only works through cooperation” ZNV created a space for encounters and exchange at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich - in the exhibition’s publicly accessible Open Space in the heart of the city.

01
Challenge
In keeping with the traditions of the show as a former motor car fair, imposing displays of big automobile brands still dominate the exhibition space.
Finding a way to stand out without losing sight of the core values of local public transport - accessibility, inclusiveness, human-centeredness - was a concern that permeated every aspect of the multilayered presentation.
02
Vision
The starting point for the overall concept was the idea to create a colorful space that invites visitors to linger and explore - like a giant playground - and carries the ÖPNV (german for local public transport) literally into the heart of the city.
The four letters of the acronym are constructed as separate exhibition spaces to showcase various aspects of local public transport.

03
Creative Concept
Ö - Mobility Hub: In the spirit of the motto “mobility only works through cooperation”, different means of public transport are presented under the roof of the “Ö”
P - Mobility in Figures: Under the title “local public transport works. for you. for everyone.” the important role of public transport in various areas of society and it’s specific impact is conveyed in a playful and interactive way
N - Partner exhibition: The public transport sector is a diverse industry with many different stakeholders. The “N” offers them a platform to showcase their expertise.
V - Event stage: Change and innovation thrive on exchange, therefore the “V” offers a stage für dialogue, discussion and impulses
04
Our Role
The realisation of this project took months of close collaboration between various subproject teams. In addition to developing a coherent narrative for the overall presentation (where do we show what?), our work focused on the concept and design of the exhibition in letter “P”.
The staging enabled visitors to immerse themselves in the colorful world of local public transport and learn key facts in a playful and entertaining way.
The exhibition comprises educational illustrations of key figures as well as interactive exhibits like the “Future Mobility Simulator” - a digital lego game table to build city scapes and influence parameters of well-being for their inhabitants - or an XXL analogue Tetris game to build multimodal travel chains.
We were involved in developing a coherent storyline for the staging, in formulating messages and brainstorming ideas for suitable interactive exhibits, as well as in the spatial design, detail design of 2D and 3D elements and supervision and support of the trades involved in setting up the exhibition.
